Athletic Court Paving FAQs
-
What is an Athletic Court?
-
Put simply, an athletic court is a dedicated area created to play a specific sport, such as basketball, or many different sports, like tennis and pickleball.
-
How Expensive is an Athletic Court?
-
There are a lot of factors that define just how expensive an athletic court can be. The most common factors are whether it is new construction or renovation, size, and materials used. That said, the average price ranges between $50,000 – $80,000 for an athletic court–basketball, pickleball & tennis courts are all priced differently, with tennis courts being the most expensive, generally. Other factors that could increase (or decrease) the price:
- The number of cracks, if any, that need to be milled and filled
- How dirty the court surface is
- The need or desire for Petromat – a paving fabric–that is used as a moisture barrier and crack preventer beneath asphalt paving
- Replacing nets and net posts and net ties; backboards; rims
- Fencing and gates
- The number of coats in the color system and the color chosen
- Whether any excavation work is needed
- Whether a temporary construction entrance is needed
- The current Asphalt Index
-
What Goes Under an Athletic Court?
-
Generally a 6-8” stone base serves as a level for the athletic court. Sometimes Petromat is used if there is a lot of moisture in the ground and an existing court is being overlaid.
-
How Long Does an Athletic Court Last?
-
This depends on the type of material the court is made from. Asphalt courts can last between 10-20 years. Synthetic materials have been shown to last around 20 years or so.
-
Do You Need a Permit to Build an Athletic Court?
-
In most circumstances, yes, a permit is needed to build an athletic court. This is typically the responsibility of the customer rather than the builder or contractor.
-
Are Athletic Courts Slippery?
-
Yes, generally athletic courts can become slippery when wet, but they can also become slippery through neglect and the build-up of dirt, mold, and other wear on the surface.
